The Devil's Christmas
Chris reads a series of stories with a sting in the tail for Christmas
The Signalman 1/4. By Charles Dickens. The ghostly tale of a haunted railway tunnel.
The Necklace 2/4. By Guy de Maupassant. A young wife yearns like Cinderella to go to the Twelfth Night ball.
Thurlow's Christmas 3/4. John Kendrick Bangs' tale about a demon, a mysterious stranger and a magical manuscript.
The She-Wolf 4/4. By Saki. At a winter house party, one unbearable guest has pretentions to be a master of the dark arts. There is consternation all round when he turns his hostess into a wolf and then can't seem to turn her back again.
Ever since he’d been a small boy, Sinbad had been enchanted by one thing and one thing alone: the sea. He would go down to the sea everyday, absolutely everyday, without fail. Sometimes he would swim in the sea. Sometimes he would simply sit and stare at it. But mostly, Sinbad loved to go down to the harbour and be amongst the ships. So sit back, relax, and let Christopher Eccleston tell you the the story of Sinbad- the adventurous sailor who travels far and wide, getting up to all manner of exploits – some of which you won’t believe.
Crossing the Dark Sea
An eyewitness the night before the D-Day landings described the sea as black with boats. The voice of this program is that of an ordinary soldier on one of those boats.
Christopher Eccleston plays Alec, a young British soldier destined for France and for war. Katherine Jenkins sings the voice of his sweetheart, Sian, in a poetic response to the day's events.
Music composed by James Whitbourn
